CFI Checkride Oral Questions: Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI)

The FOI portion of the CFI oral isn't a vocabulary quiz — examiners use it to find out whether you can think like a teacher. Every concept from the Aviation Instructor's Handbook (FAA-H-8083-9) will be tested through application: not 'define the law of primacy' but 'your student learned a flat round-out from a YouTube video — which law of learning is working against you, and what do you do?'

Prepare by attaching one teaching story to every FOI concept. The examiner is auditioning you: your answers should sound like a CFI explaining to a student, complete with examples, not like a candidate reciting a list.

How people learn: laws, levels, and domains

The laws of learning (REEPIR): Readiness (students learn when prepared and motivated — a tired, anxious student learns almost nothing), Exercise (skills strengthen with practice), Effect (learning is strengthened by pleasant outcomes — early wins matter; humiliation teaches avoidance), Primacy (what's learned first is learned best — teach it right the first time, because unteaching is harder), Intensity (vivid, real experiences outteach lectures), and Recency (latest-practiced is best-remembered — the logic of pre-checkride review flights).

The levels of learning: rote (recites the words), understanding (explains the concept), application (can do it), correlation (connects it to other knowledge — the ACS target). Your job is to design instruction that climbs the ladder: asking 'what would happen if...' questions pushes students from understanding toward correlation. The domains: cognitive (knowledge), affective (attitudes — where ADM lives), psychomotor (skill). And the memory model worth knowing: sensory → short-term (limited capacity; chunking helps) → long-term (encoding improves with meaning, organization, and rehearsal), with forgetting countered by recall cues, repetition and application.

Human behavior: defense mechanisms, anxiety, and professionalism

Defense mechanisms appear when students feel threatened by failure — and your scenario answers must first recognize, then defuse without confrontation: denial ('the landing was fine'), rationalization ('the wind shifted' — every time), projection (blaming the airplane, ATC, or you), compensation (emphasizing strengths to mask a weakness — brilliant on systems, avoids crosswind landings), repression, displacement (anger redirected to a safer target), and resignation (gives up — 'you take it'). The instructor response pattern: lower the perceived threat (normalize error), rebuild with attainable wins (law of effect), and address the underlying skill gap directly but privately.

Anxiety and stress: normal anxiety can sharpen performance; abnormal reactions (extreme overcooperation, rapid mood swings, freezing) require slowing down, simplifying tasks, and sometimes recommending against continuing that day. Professionalism: the sincerity/acceptance/personal-appearance basics, the prohibition on ridicule, and the big one — instructor as the certificate's gatekeeper: your endorsements are legal documents (61.189 requires keeping records of endorsements for at least 3 years), and 'the student isn't ready' is a sentence you must be able to say under social and financial pressure. Tie professionalism to risk management: teaching ADM means modeling it — students copy what you do, not what you say (law of intensity meets law of primacy).

Practice questions with answers & rationales

Q1. Your new student watched 200 landing videos and flares ten feet high, every time. Which FOI concepts are in play and what's your plan?

Answer: Primacy (the wrong sight picture was learned first and is now the default) compounded by exercise (he's rehearsed it mentally hundreds of times). Plan: don't just repeat landings — interrupt the pattern: explain and demonstrate the correct sight picture (understanding before application), use contrasting demonstrations (intensity), isolate the flare with low approaches down the runway, and reward each improvement immediately (effect). Expect slower progress than teaching from scratch and say so — unlearning costs extra trials.

Q2. What are the four levels of learning, and what level does the ACS demand?

Answer: Rote, understanding, application, correlation. The ACS targets correlation — the applicant connects knowledge across subjects and applies it to novel scenarios (that's why DPEs ask scenario questions instead of definitions). For me as an instructor, the operational meaning: I'm not done when the student can perform the maneuver (application); I'm done when they can tell me how today's density altitude changes it (correlation), and my questioning strategy — 'what if' and 'why' questions — is the tool that gets them there.

Q3. A student blames every bad landing on the airplane's 'mushy elevator.' Name the defense mechanism and your response.

Answer: Projection (possibly rationalization — the distinction: projection assigns the fault to someone/something else; rationalization invents acceptable excuses). Response: don't argue the excuse — reduce the threat that's producing it. Debrief with data ('let's look at where the round-out started'), normalize the difficulty ('everyone floats here at first'), then set up an exercise where success is achievable and feedback is objective. Confronting the excuse head-on usually entrenches it; removing the need for it works.

Q4. How do you recognize abnormal reactions to stress in a student, and what do you do?

Answer: Watch for responses inappropriate to the situation: extreme rigidity or freezing on the controls, inappropriate laughter or anger, rapid changes in cooperation, fixation, or marked deterioration in tasks they'd mastered. Respond by reducing task load immediately (take the radio, simplify the lesson), reassure, and if the pattern persists, end the lesson and discuss it on the ground — possibly recommending a break or, in rare cases, suggesting the student's goals be re-examined. The teaching point: pushing through abnormal stress builds negative learning (effect/intensity working against you).

Q5. What's the difference between the demonstration-performance method and scenario-based training, and when do you use each?

Answer: Demonstration-performance (explanation → demonstration → student performance with supervision → evaluation) is the workhorse for psychomotor skills: maneuvers, procedures, flows. Scenario-based training wraps skills in realistic missions with decisions and consequences, targeting ADM and correlation — there's no single right answer, and the debrief centers on the student's decision process (often via collaborative critique). Use D-P to build the skill, SBT to make it judgment. A pure-SBT syllabus frustrates students who lack the underlying skills; a pure-D-P syllabus produces checkride-passers who can't make decisions.

Q6. Your student's mother is paying for training and calls asking whether he's ready to solo 'this week, before his birthday.' He isn't. FOI concepts and your move?

Answer: External pressure attacking the gatekeeper role — with readiness (the law and the FOI concept) at stake. Move: the endorsement decision stays purely performance-based (61.87 requirements demonstrated, my records documenting it); I tell both student and mother the specific, objective gaps and the plan to close them; and I don't let the birthday near the decision. The endorsement is my certificate on the line — and modeling that boundary is itself instruction in ADM for the student.

Q7. How does the law of effect shape how you debrief a bad flight?

Answer: Effect says learning strengthens when accompanied by satisfying outcomes and weakens with frustration — so a debrief that's a list of failures teaches the student to dread debriefs (and flying). Structure: start with what genuinely went well (real, specific praise), analyze errors as solvable problems with causes ('the flare started high because the aim point drifted'), have the student self-assess first (collaborative critique builds judgment), and end with the plan and an achievable next step. Honest, specific, and forward-looking — never humiliating.

Common mistakes to avoid

Educational study material only — not a substitute for the current FAR/AIM, the Airman Certification Standards, your aircraft's POH/RFM, or instruction from your CFI. Regulations and procedures change: always verify against current FAA publications and your examiner's expectations before checkride day.

Keep studying
