Private Pilot Oral Exam Questions: Airspace & VFR Weather Minimums

Airspace is the single most reliable topic on a private pilot oral. Nearly every examiner opens your cross-country plan, points at a piece of airspace on the chart, and asks three things: What is it? What do you need to enter it? What weather do you need inside it? If you can answer those three questions for every class of airspace without hesitating, you have removed the most common reason private applicants get sent home.

This guide reviews the framework, then drills you with the same style of questions Designated Pilot Examiners actually ask, each with a full answer and rationale. The references that matter: 14 CFR 91.155 (VFR minimums), 91.131/91.130/91.129 (B/C/D operations), 91.215 and 91.225 (transponder and ADS-B), and AIM Chapter 3.

The three-question framework for any airspace

Entry requirements. Class A: IFR clearance (VFR flight is not authorized). Class B: an explicit ATC clearance — you must hear the words 'cleared into the Class Bravo.' Class C and D: two-way radio communications established, which means the controller has read back your callsign; 'aircraft calling, stand by' does not establish communications. Class E and G: no ATC requirement for VFR, weather minimums permitting.

Equipment. Class B requires a two-way radio, a Mode C transponder, and ADS-B Out. The Mode C veil (30 NM around the primary Class B airport) requires the transponder and ADS-B Out even underneath the shelves. Class C requires two-way radio, altitude-reporting transponder, and ADS-B Out. Above 10,000 ft MSL (excluding at/below 2,500 AGL), transponder and ADS-B Out are also required.

Speed limits and special-use airspace

Below 10,000 ft MSL the limit is 250 KIAS (91.117). At or below 2,500 AGL within 4 NM of a Class C or D primary airport: 200 KIAS. Under Class B shelves and in VFR corridors through Class B: 200 KIAS. These show up as quick 'gotcha' follow-ups after the main airspace question.

For special-use airspace, know the practical differences: Prohibited (never), Restricted (need permission from the controlling agency when active — ATC clearance through an active restricted area counts), Warning (offshore, same hazards as restricted), MOAs (VFR may enter, but exercise extreme caution; call the controlling agency for status), Alert areas (high volume of training), and TFRs (check NOTAMs every flight — busting a TFR is the fastest route to a certificate action).

Practice questions with answers & rationales

Q1. You're approaching a Class C airport and the controller says 'N123AB, stand by.' May you enter the Class C?

Answer: Yes. Two-way radio communications are established once the controller responds using your callsign — 'N123AB, stand by' counts. If the controller had said 'aircraft calling, stand by' without your callsign, communications would not be established and you must remain outside. This is the classic Class C entry question; the rationale is AIM 3-2-4.

Q2. What do you need to enter Class B airspace as a private pilot?

Answer: An explicit ATC clearance into the Class B ('cleared into the Class Bravo'), a two-way radio, a Mode C (altitude-reporting) transponder, and ADS-B Out. A private pilot certificate satisfies the pilot requirement at any Class B; student pilots need specific training and a logbook endorsement under 61.95, and some Class B airports listed in 91.131/Appendix D prohibit student solo operations entirely.

Q3. What are the basic VFR weather minimums in Class E airspace at 8,500 ft MSL? At 11,500 ft MSL?

Answer: At 8,500 MSL (Class E below 10,000): 3 SM visibility and 500 below, 1,000 above, 2,000 ft horizontal from clouds. At 11,500 MSL (Class E at or above 10,000): 5 SM and 1,000 below, 1,000 above, 1 SM horizontal. Rationale: above 10,000 ft there is no 250-knot limit, so closing speeds are higher and you need more time to see and avoid.

Q4. Why is Class B 'clear of clouds' when everything else requires cloud separation distances?

Answer: Because in Class B, ATC is positively separating all aircraft, IFR and VFR. The cloud-distance buffers elsewhere exist to give a VFR pilot time to see and avoid an IFR aircraft popping out of a cloud; in Class B that risk is managed by the controller. This 'why' question is how examiners test correlation-level understanding rather than memorization.

Q5. Your transponder fails in flight inside the Mode C veil. Can you continue?

Answer: You may continue to the airport of ultimate destination, including intermediate stops, per 91.215(d) ATC may authorize continued flight. For a planned flight with an inoperative transponder into transponder-required airspace, you must request a deviation from ATC at least one hour in advance. The practical answer the examiner wants: talk to ATC — they can authorize most transponder/ADS-B contingencies in real time.

Q6. You want to fly through a MOA on your cross-country. What do you do?

Answer: VFR flight through a MOA is legal without clearance, but the correct ADM answer is: check its status before entering — times of use are on the chart margin, and Flight Service or the controlling agency can tell you if it's hot. If active, fly through with extreme caution or route around it; military aircraft inside may be maneuvering aggressively and are not always talking to ATC on your frequency.

Q7. What altitude does Class G extend to where the airspace above is Class E with a fuzzy magenta border?

Answer: The magenta vignette means Class E begins at 700 ft AGL, so Class G runs from the surface to 700 AGL. Outside any vignette, Class E typically begins at 1,200 ft AGL. If you can also explain why the 700-ft floor exists (to protect instrument approaches into nearby airports), you'll impress the examiner.

Common mistakes to avoid
